Emily Fairlight & Fraser Ross at the Sunday Sit Down

Emily Fairlight is a poet and a songwriter, she’ll be performing songs from her entire catalog with her new band. They will be joined by special guest Fraser Ross, our very own Pacific purveyor of alt-folk music, for a very fine afternoon of music indeed.

She describes her own music style as introspective alternative folk, written with a rock ‘n’ roll heart. Others have compared her sound to Natalie Merchant, P.J. Harvey, Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) and Cat Power.

Her voice ranges from the most intimate of whispers to the strongest of wails, delivering beautiful and honest lyrics with heartfelt melodies.

Blue Smoke welcomes you to ‘The Sunday Sit Down Get Down’ our very own folk club event. We present local luminaries and national touring artist of the finest calibre, this is a first rate opportunity to catch a matinee concert with family and friends.

Our doors open at 3pm and the music always starts at 4pm so make sure you come early to get settled in.

There is a suggested ‘Koha’ entry for this event we encourage you to support the musicians and pay what you can afford.

Emily has been composing and performing for over a decade now, and in this time has played throughout New Zealand, Australia and the USA. Her third and most recent trip to the USA saw her record her sophomore album with Doug Walseth of The Cat’s Eye Studio in Austin, Texas, featuring some incredible Texan musicians including Cully Symington (Bright Eyes and Okkervil River) and multi-instrumentalist Kullen Fuchs.

With a new band featuring Ben Cole (The Datsuns, Joint Chiefs) on drums, Andrew Bain (Fur Patrol, Svelte) on bass and and occasionally Tom Watson (Cassette and Lawrence Arabia) on guitar, Emily is ready to tour New Zealand with a slew of new songs written over the last year, most of which will feature on the new album.
