This series welcomes folks to talk about their hobbies\, studies\, work\, art and niche\, special interest topics! \nOur guest speakers for October are: \nSatori Mayell – An Artist and Ecologist’s Trip to the Subantarctic Islands\nNeil Heslop – Wired for Sound\nBonnie Judkins – Lighting Design and Event Production \nEach presenter will deliver a short 20min presentation featuring a slide show\, physical props\, loads of fun facts\, and some laughs along the way! Plus plenty of time for questions and discussion to follow. \nArtist Satori Mayell recounts her scholarship and expedition painting her way around the remote Subantarctic Islands.\nHalfway between Aotearoa and Antarctica lies the ‘Roaring 40s’ and ‘Furious 50s’; a wild and blistering wilderness of ocean and perpetual wind with a few lone islands serving as sanctuaries for all the birds and beasts of the Southern Ocean. See Satori’s photography\, paintings\, and vivid descriptions of fields of giant Subantarctic flowers in bloom\, rafts of penguins diving from cliffs\, ten thousand albatross filling the sky\, and her personal hunt for the near-mythical Subantarctic Snipe\, all while learning about what makes these islands so unique and how we can protect them for future generations.\n—\nNeil Heslop has worked as an Audiologist for 28 years\, including spending the last 23 years working for a charitable cochlear implant programme. Neil has offered to guide us on a sojourn through anything hearing-related\, with a focus on his specialty area of cochlear implants. Neil will ralk us through the anatomy of how we hear\, dancing hair cells\, and a bit of an overview of how we measure hearing\, and what happens when we lose it (at music venues or festivals for example) including tinnitus.\n—\nBonnie Judkins is a local event producer and lighting expert with two decades of experience under her belt in the live events sector. She has worked as a designer\, educator and operator on everything from tour management to community festivals. DESCRIPTION:Following the release of the single ‘Vote’ on May 11th\, Tim Mahon unleashes his new album The Great Kerfuffle\, and he’ll be hitting the road with his band – also named The Great Kerfuffle. \nTim Mahon has a track record in multiple areas of Aotearoa music\, and somehow he’s also found the time to keep writing his own music. His first solo album Music From a Lightbulb from 2002\, was cleverly released under the name The Moth. \nAs the former bass player of The Plague (1978-1979)\, The Whizz Kids (1979-1980)\, and Blam Blam Blam (1980-1982)\, he’s been an integral part of these highly influential Aotearoa bands. \nBehind the scenes\, Mahon has also been involved witha number of initiatives which have had a long-lasting impact. He became the project manager at the Otara Music Arts Centre (OMAC) in 1987\, where he got local band Bamboo signed to PolyGram\, and to open the BB King/U2 show at Western Springs. At the same time producing Proud music featuring Sisters Underground and The O.M.C. Also MA-V-ELLE. \nBut this is back to the roots of where it all came from Kiwi rock you’ll want to wrap your arms around and rock the night away. \n

DESCRIPTION:Feral\, devolved and running on instinct\, the six songs on Sulfate’s third album ‘And It Wants’ grapple between David Harris unleashing on his drum kit\, Zac Arnold conjuring fuzz and feedback and Peter Ruddell’s taut\, wiry guitar-work and commanding baritone. Written and recorded in New Lynn’s industrial area\, this new batch of songs were created on a diet of Cormac McCarthy novels\, Adam Curtis documentaries and the madness of gothic horror. Since recording\, Sulfate’s line up has expanded once more\, introducing multi-instrumentalist Louisa Nicklin to the band’s inexorable live performances. \nSonically\, Sulfate set out some parameters at the outset of the album recordings – and it was important for things to sound real. The band wanted real instruments to be played\, and\, importantly\, sound like they’re being played\, by real\, living people. This was a conscious reaction to the modern\, online\, perfect-existence\, social media-ness of it all. Audio engineer Emily Wheatcroft-Snape was recommended to the band because of her ability to capture sounds with accuracy and precision – and she encapsulated the live band just as they had hoped. \nThematically\, ‘And It Wants’ sees Ruddell clinging to optimism and joy while being subject to the existential nihilism of our current hypernormal\, western reality. “Death is all through this record. The songs were born out of the feeling that there are no rules\, that nothing matters\, and that we all die. That we dance around the fact that death comes for us all\, but we never really\, truly\, acknowledge it – it’s just too big or too heavy to have any kind of impact on our day to day existence. The intent is to provide a sonic backdrop to dance ecstatically\, liberated\, as the world around you burns. Largely self-produced by Annemarie Duff\, the project has topped the NZ Alt Charts\, landed the Student Radio Network Best EP award and opened for Blonde Redhead. Bringing the tracks to life on stages around Aotearoa\, Hope Robertson is on bass and vocals (of Death and the Maiden)\, Annemarie on guitar and vocals\, and a trusty sampler for beats and synth. \n_________________ \nDeath and the Maiden \nA three piece band from Otepoti/Dunedin. A rural haunting style of moody electronic grooves\, gossamer vocals\, sonic guitars and bass that deliver hypnotic sounds leaning into anxiety.\nThey will be performing new material in preparation for recording their follow up album to 2024’s Uneven Ground. \n_________________ \nWho are Flannel Hound? \nFlannel Hound are a promoter and events organisation run as a non-profit. Featuring visual DJing by Erica Sklenars\, videography by Theo Taylor\, styling by Karlya Smith and design by Daniel Alexander\, the show sees Tonnon playing the roles of DJ\, singer\, documentarian and revolutionary lecturer. \nThe show explores two timelines: the Situationist International in France and Italy during the 1960s\, and Whanganui\, New Zealand at the turn of the millennium – a mysterious\, forgotten city where a new battle is being waged against what Guy Debord famously called The Society of the Spectacle. \nSwapping his guitar for a vocoder\, and transforming two Synthstrom Deluges into honorary turntables\, Tonnon connects these seemingly distant worlds through the musical language of turn-of-the-millennium dance culture. \n“Cinematographer is part film\, part francophile performance lecture\, part disco club set\,” says Tonnon. “It’s a world that we’ve built for this new music\, exploring some newfound passions – the French avant-garde\, cinema\, urban politics of the 1960s\, turn-of-the-millennium dance culture and documentary films\, and the glorious\, mystifying city of Whanganui.” \nThe ambitious audiovisual performance introduces an entirely new body of work developed with Tonnon’s band and longtime producer Jonathan Pearce. SUMMARY:Finding Balance Album Launch/Live Concert Recording - Alex Boot
DESCRIPTION: \nI’m really excited to present and record my debut solo album\, Finding Balance. This project draws on influences from modern jazz\, hip-hop\, fusion and cinematic soundscapes. The work will be performed by a six-piece jazz ensemble featuring Cameron Pearce\, Nick Pitts\, Sam McKay\, Luke Belcher\, and Cameron Finlay. The music shifts between energetic\, groove-driven passages and more spacious and atmospheric moments. \nI want my album Finding Balance to reflect the journey so many people go through at high-pressure moments in our careers\, and how we manage and deal with navigating both internal and external pressure. Writing this album during the final year of my Bachelor of Music has been a journey of many highs and lows\, and I hope the emotions I felt during this time are reflected through the music. \nAs an audience member\, you become part of the professional recording.
