International Rebellion – Rise up at ECan

April 15, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 8:00 pm NZST

WHAT: On Monday 15 April a global week of rebellion begins in Aotearoa. Regional Councils across the country will be called to take courageous action on the climate and ecological emergencies we face. They’ve been failing us, and we’re going to change that.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) is the major target for South Island rebels on Monday 15th April. Will you take action with us? Together we can show that protecting the living earth is an absolute priority.

Book the day off work now. We’ll kick off early and have multiple acts of rebellion throughout the day. Keep watching this event for updates.

HOW: Attending our NonViolent Direct Action trainings in the 2 weeks prior will give practice in techniques for peaceful disruption, inform of the legal implications, and let you consider what kind of role you are up for. From arrestable to support roles, we need people across the range of participation.

If you can’t get to a training, or connect with us before the day, show up on the day and there’ll still be a role for you.

WHY:

A BIT MORE ABOUT EMERGENCY STUFF…. TIPPING POINTS

ECan has been acting like an environmental nightmare! Since being taken over by government appointed commissioners in 2010, it has literally opened the floodgates for big irrigation and dairy conversion and now water bottling!! The resulting damage to our rivers and climate will be felt for many decades, and our precious drinking water is being sold for profit. On 15 April we’re going to remind ECan that they are accountable to the people and their role is to protect the environment.

This year democracy is restored to ECan and we need to show Canterbury voters how appalled the people are by the governance of this organisation. We need voters to choose new councillors with courage, to act FOR the environment.

XR demands of ECan:

1. Declare a climate and ecological emergency, and tell the truth about the environmental crisis.

2. Strive for a carbon neutral Canterbury by 2025.

3. True participatory democracy to oversee the changes needed.
