Machinedrum Bio:
Machinedrum, also known as Travis Stewart, is a music producer and film composer originally hailing from North Carolina but currently residing in California. Stewart has released numerous albums on prestigious labels such as Ninja Tune, Planet Mu, LuckyMe, Hotflush, and Merck. Notably, he has collaborated with a diverse range of vocalists including Azealia Banks, A$AP Ferg, Shelley FKA DRAM, Tanerélle, Jesse Boykins III, Theophilus London, and Dawn Richard.
Additionally, Machinedrum has engaged in collaborative projects with producers such as Jimmy Edgar for J-E-T-S, Braille (Praveen Sharma) for Sepalcure, and Om Unit for the rave-inspired footwork project Dream Continuum. His collaborations extend to instrumentalists like piano virtuoso Tigran Hamasyan, progressive guitarist Tosin Abasi (Animals As Leaders), versatile drummer Ian Maciak, multi-instrumentalist Laura Escudé, and jazz drummer Steve Lyman.
Machinedrum’s remix portfolio includes artists such as Solange, Bonobo, Kelis, Rudimental, Jamie Lidell, DJ Shadow, Emily King, Noisia, SBTRKT, The Glitch Mob, Eprom, and even Johnny Cash. Beyond remixing, he has made significant contributions to film and TV scoring under his real name, Travis Stewart, with credits including Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” and the German true-crime drama “Das Geheimnis Des Totenwaldes” (internationally known as “Dark Woods”). He also played a role in scoring the off-Broadway musical “Camp Wanatachi.”
Travis Stewart’s musical journey began in Eden, North Carolina, where he was exposed to various influences from his grandfather’s country band to his parents’ eclectic instrument-filled house. His interest in polyrhythms developed during his time playing percussion in high school, leading to a shift towards electronic music in 8th grade. Stewart initiated the Machinedrum project during his final high school years in 1998-1999 and released his first record, “Now You Know,” on Merck Records in 2001.
Post-graduation, Stewart pursued audio engineering studies at Full Sail University in Florida. Afterward, he moved to New York City, joining the Normrex label and producing for artists like Tiombe Lockhart, Theophilus London, Jesse Boykins III, Azealia Banks, MeLo-X, and Mickey Factz. His collaborative ventures and solo releases, such as “Room(s),” “Vapor City,” and “Human Energy,” have defined his career.
Notably, Machinedrum’s latest album, “A View of U,” showcases collaborations with Sub Focus, Chrome Sparks, Father (Awful Records), Freddie Gibbs, Mono/Poly (Brainfeeder), Tigran Hamasyan, Jesse Boykins III, Rochelle Jordan, and Tanerélle. He also debuted “A View Of U Live” in April 2021, a performance created in collaboration with Daito Manabe.
In September 2021, Machinedrum released the EP “Psyconia” via Ninja Tune, featuring Deniro Farrar, Angelica Bess, and Jorge Elbrecht. Moving forward, his project “elysian,” released on April 15, 2022, under the alias tstewart on Mercury KX, pays homage to Elysian Park in Los Angeles and is dedicated to his daughter Billie Josephine Stewart. The accompanying elysian walk app encourages outdoor exploration and unlocks exclusive content based on users’ GPS locations.
Travis Stewart’s live performances have graced iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater, Brooklyn Mirage, Meow Wolf, and various festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella, Movement, Electric Forest, and Shambhala Festival. His residency on Rinse FM, titled “Now You Know Machinedrum,” premiered in May 2022, showcasing unreleased music in a unique mix. A mix for BBC6 Music, titled “Lose Yourself with Machinedrum,” followed on May 13, 2022.
Looking ahead, there are exciting prospects for Stewart, including a new J-E-T-S project with Jimmy Edgar and a forthcoming Machinedrum album on Ninja Tune scheduled for Q1 2024. Stewart stands out in the dance music scene not just for his versatile style but also for his consistently progressive approach, earning him respect and admiration from both peers and fans alike.
