SUMMARY:Mea Culpa Put On Their Space Suits
DESCRIPTION:For the last show in their first tour\, Mea Culpa will be performing at Space Academy on a lazy Sunday evening! But don’t let the day fool you – there’ll be space for dancing if lounging ain’t your style\, so whether you wear your slippers or your stilettos we’ll have you sorted. \nMea Culpa is a Dunedin based band\, built around two unique singer/songwriters\, Emma Wells and Leigham Fitzpatrick. \nEmma Wells is a musician originally from Invercargill now living in Dunedin. Her influences are vocalists such as Florence Welsh (Florence and the machine) Eva Cassidy and Beth Gibbons (Portishead). Her originals take on a vulnerable soulful feel with bouts of power. Classically trained she is able to control her voice to express different emotions capturing the essence of her songs. \nLeigham on the other hand is heavily influenced by the likes of Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave. Their often dark lyrics are accompanied by an unconventional guitar style which uses a mixture of alternative tunings and capos. \nSeparately\, their vocal styles are strikingly different and together they form intoxicating harmonies that will sweep you off your feet and into the stars\, where dreams come to life and everything is not as it seems… The band also has one of the smoothest fretless bass players\, Ari van Eerten\, and a master of the beat\, percussionist Nashoba Addai. For the gig at Space Academy\, they’ll be joined by Christchurch local Shaun Malloch on pedal steel and electric guitar. \nDoors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7.30pm\, finishing at 10pm – so you’ll be home in time for supper and a snooze before the manic Monday madness begins… \n
