Sustainability in Music Workshop/Discussion

The world is facing a myriad of ecological catastrophes – plastic pollution, resource depletion, mass extinction and most notably, climate change. What roles and responsibilities does music have in the face of these crises? How can musicians and the music industry reduce their impact on the environment? How can they help promote awareness and change around such issues? And how could they be assisted in such an endeavor?

Imagined Community and The Rubbish Trip would like to invite musicians, those working in the music industry, music enthusiasts and anyone interested in making our future a little bit brighter to an evening of discussion.

We want to create educational workshops aimed at encouraging and supporting musicians wanting to reduce their environmental impact and promote awareness of environmental issues through their music. We want to hear your thoughts on this subject. What issues are you interested in learning more about?

The workshop will be followed by an informal jam session from about 7:30pm, to put ideas of sustainability and resourcefulness into practice. This will be an opportunity to make music with various upcycled, adapted/modified and invented instruments, as a way of being conscious of the materials and resources we use to make music, and their impact on the earth. We invite anyone to bring along instruments to participate in this, particularly those that demonstrate/represent environmental sustainability. We will also provide materials for anyone who is keen to have a go, but feel free to bring along anything with musical potential – even rubbish!
