SUMMARY:Terrible Sons - In Five Movements
DESCRIPTION:The Piano presents ‘Coffee Concerts’ Sundays at Eleven. Celebrating New Zealand Music Month\, May 2024. \nTerrible Sons is the ‘folkish’ coming together of songwriters and musicians LA Mitchell and husband Matt Barus. The couple live with their two children in an intentional community in Ōtautahi. Their music reflects their local neighborhood while exploring the tensions of some of the more interior feelings we share: exhaustion & joy\, heartbreak & love\, loneliness & companionship.\nBoth have had extensive and varied experiences in music; from supporting artists such as Stevie Wonder\, the Pretenders and Blondie\, (who they also wrote songs for) as session musicians for Dave Dobbyn and as a member of Fly My Pretties\, to playing a show on a special MTV flight between Auckland and Sydney. Lately\, as Terrible Sons\, they’ve been touring Aotearoa while releasing a quartet of EP’s and their recent critically acclaimed debut LP The Raft Is Not The Shore through Nettwerk Records. \n“There’s a paradoxical fragility yet strength in the songs: fragility anchored in life’s uncertainties (reflected in the album title); strength in the pervasive optimism. A Covid-era inspired and delayed album\, The Raft Is Not The Shore now sails our way carrying with it the growing reputation of Terrible Sons. Listen to the album and see them live. Their songs float on a tide of rare depth and beauty.” 13th Floor \n

Shand brings a modern nostalgic vibe for lovers of lush\, twangy guitar pop. These beats-driven tracks come with a classic 90s shoe gaze twist\, with influences from the likes of Curve\, Chapterhouse\, Medicine and equally from modern R&B/hip hop heroes. \n*Blair Parkes\nBlair Parkes is the Te Karoro Karoro / New Brighton based singer and songwriter of Aotearoa / New Zealand acts running club\, all fall down\, bridal path\, cardigan bay\, condensations\, creeley\, the l.e.d.s\, the letter 5\, little dead things\, range\, saturations\, swim everything\, thomas : parkes\, 103.\nHe is super excited to be playing at Space Academy where he will be performing stripped back electric versions of songs from his forty year career.\nBlair’s recent single\, ‘time will stop all of its meaning’ topped the Radioscope alternative airplay charts in February…but will he even play it? come along and see ! \n*Admiral Drowsy\nAdmiral Drowsy is the song writing veneer under which you will find Luke Redfern Scott.\nLuke has been residing in Aotearoa since the winter of 2016 and has gone on to release two full length albums ‘The Gutter Boy Spectates’ in 2021 and the more recent ‘Industrial Consistency’ released back in January 2024.\nHis music has been said to sound like distorted medieval folk allusions\, songs that have a whispering mystery to them. He has performed sporadically over the years and has been lucky enough to play at a number of venues across the motu and has collaborated with a number of different artists. \n
