SUMMARY:Marlin's Dreaming - Hirl - Album Release Show
DESCRIPTION:Dunedin Indie Pop outfit Marlin’s Dreaming have announced a nine date tour of Australia & New Zealand to celebrate the release of their new album HIRL due later this year and the band’s first since the critically acclaimed record Hasten in 2021. \nHIRL New Zealand tour dates:\n12/09 – Totara St. \, Mount Maunganui\n13/09 – Theatre Royal\, New Plymouth\n14/09 – Meow Nui\, Wellington\n19/09 – Hollywood Avondale\, Auckland\n20/09 – Loons\, Lyttelton\n21/09 – Errick’s\, Dunedin \nFollowing on from their folk-accented single Earnestly (featuring Erny Belle) last month\, Marlin’s Dreaming’s new track Hello\, My Dear dances between softly spoken country verse\, towering chorus\, and back again with the vocal dynamism of frontman Semisi Ma’ia’i. \nRecorded between the renowned Roundhead Studios and an airy room in Central Otago\, Hello\, My Dear takes on bold sonorous production reminiscent of the band’s earliest work. The single is accompanied by a music video directed by Semisi\, in which an ascetic artist isolated from the world around him interacts with past and future versions of himself. \nMarlin’s Dreaming is an indie pop band from Dunedin\, New Zealand. Formed in 2017 by longtime friends Semisi Ma’ia’i (Vocals & guitar)\, Oscar Johns (Bass)\, Hamish Morgan (Drums) & De Stevens (Guitar)\, the band found unexpected success with their debut album ‘Lizard Tears’ (2017) which garnered international acclaim including from COMPLEX who called it an “exciting\, intoxicating debut”. \nSubsequent releases like ‘Talk On/Commic’ (2018) and ‘Quotidian’ (2020) showcased their evolution into angular guitars and angst-driven melodies\, earning praise from publications like CLASH\, NME & Brooklyn Vegan. Their introspective 2021 release ‘Hasten’ was an acoustically driven album exploring themes of post-pandemic life in New Zealand’s desolate\, rugged south island. \nThey have toured with Parquet Courts\, The Chills\, Kirin J Callinan & Dope Lemon.\nHaving played sold-out tours across Australia and New Zealand & played Marlin’s Dreaming continues to push the musical boundaries\, heightening guitar pop to a fine art. \n

SUMMARY:Just Janie & Sig Wilder | Sylvia Tour
DESCRIPTION:Two modern day troubadours brought together by the poetry of two Sylvia’s. \nJust Janie and Sig Wilder are banding together to tour their new double single ‘Sylvia’. Fusing nostalgic Laurel Canyon folk and alt-country grit onstage in a ‘songwriter rounds’ format\, they will be sharing the songs and stories of the music that made them. \nSig and Janie met earlier this year in Te Whanganui-a-Tara and realized they’d both written songs titled ‘Sylvia’\, influenced by poetry collections from Sylvia Plath and Sylvia Legris. After performing together\, the duo knew there was something special when their voices merged. Now they’re bringing that magic to the stage. \n‘Sylvia’ includes two tracks\, written individually and recorded together. \nSylvia I\, written and composed by Just Janie\, is a response to reading Sylvia Plath’s poetry collection Ariel. After picking up the collection at Scorpio Books in Ōtautahi and feeling drawn in from the two cover lines: ‘I rise with my red hair\, and eat men like air’\, Janie was flawed by the collection. This is a song to deal with the trauma of reading Sylvia Plath. \nSylvia II\, written and composed by Sig Wilder\, is a response to reading Sylvia Legris’s poetry collection Garden Physic. With each page Sig\, who is also a gardener\, discovered a wealth of complex plant references and botanical histories. He was inspired by the botanical glossolalia seemingly of Sylvia’s own invention and the collection’s ability to create music from language. ‘How to write about flowers without the nauseating sentimental phraseology?’ Legris writes. This is song is an exploration of the language of plants and the haunting relationship between poet and reader. \nDrawing inspiration from the folk scene of the late sixties and early seventies\, Central Otago-born artist Just Janie has a crisp and tender style\, creating worlds for listeners to melt into. Raised in the American Midwest and now living under the Southern Cross\, Sig Wilder’s music is a journey through the hills and plains of Aotearoa\, weaving the nostalgia and sorrow of Americana into the fabric of Aotearoa’s musical landscape. \n
