Vili\, TJOPI and KOMMI \n16+ \n  \nRukuhia mai rā. \nDive with us into the undercurrents of our Māori–Pacific music scene — the rich\, dark depths of Moana sound\, undeniable in their pull\, draw and influence. \nThese innovative ringa puoro take us beneath the surface\, into sounds that conjure conceptions of Rarohenga and Pulotu — places beyond the seen world\, and the source of the waves. \nFeel inspiration rise to meet you as three powerful local acts weave together soundwaves from beyond. \n  \nFolina E. Vili \nSāmoa (Falefā\, Faleāpuna) \nFolina E. Vili is a first-generation NZ-born Sāmoan afakasi creative with roots in the industrial estate of eastside Ōtautahi. Her music combines vintage keyboards\, raw vocals and cracked sound\, with songs that traverse time and unapologetically explore the uncomfortable and vulnerable heart space. \n  \nTJOPI \nPrimitive folk music. \nPohlen Newbery (Tūhoe\, Ngāti Porou) and Tjalling de Vries (Tangata Tiriti) collaborate to create semi-industrial layers of field recordings\, synth\, sheet-metal feedback and looped samples. Together\, these form a sinister soundscape for Popi’s toi kupu and reinterpreted waiata in both te reo Māori and English. \n  \nKOMMI \nKāti Taoka\, Kāi Te Pahi\, Kāti Moki\, Kāti Ruahikihiki\, Kāi Tūāhuriri\, Manutahi\, Ngāti Moeahu \nSomewhere between the misty\, salt-soaked hills of Ōketeupoko / Lyttelton and the old swamps where the taiao still screeches\, KOMMI is making music that feels less like entertainment and more like necromancy. \nNon-binary rap artist. Songwriter. Poet. Lecturer in Māori and Indigenous Studies and te reo Māori. Art collaborator. Swampwitch. \nNone of these titles quite fit\, but together they sketch the outline of someone who refuses the tidy categories demanded by the modern world. Their work is rooted in the dialect of Kāi Tahu\, carrying the cadence and worldview of their people\, with strong whakapapa to Te Āti Awa\, Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama. \n  \nThis event forms part of Ihirangaranga: creation & connection\, a multi-week programme presented by Te Whare Tapere from 13 August–5 September\, celebrating Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa | Māori Music Month. \nGuided by the whakaaro of ihirangaranga\, the programme explores sound as a source of connection — carrying memory\, wellbeing and culture across generations. \nNgā mihi nui to the Farina Thompson Charitable Trust\, proudly managed by Perpetual Guardian\, for their generous support in making Ihirangaranga: creation & connection possible. \n

DESCRIPTION:Following the release of their recent single\, “I Do Mine”\, Debt Club announce their first Aotearoa nationwide tour. The tour will celebrate the release of their debut album “Foothold” which is out August 12th & available for vinyl pre-order now! \nDebt Club are a Pōneke based indie / folk rock six piece who blend jangling indie rock\, folk\, alt-country and emo into a sound defined by rich arrangements\, soaring saxophone melodies\, and emotionally direct songwriting. Since forming in 2023\, the band has quickly become a notable presence in Aotearoa’s underground music scene through their dynamic live performances and textured\, heartfelt songs. Debt Club have shared stages with Marlin’s Dreaming\, Phoebe Rings and Australia’s Floodlights\, while appearing at festivals including Rhythm and Vines\, Twisted Frequency\, CubaDupa and Newtown Festival. Following the release of their debut EP\, “Taste For Stout\,” the band recently unveiled “I Do Mine\,” the first single from their forthcoming debut album “Foothold\,” due out on August 12th. \nJoining Debt Club for the Christchurch date is Model Home! \nModel Home is a Christchurch\, New Zealand quartet founded in 2018 bringing their localised\ntake on midwest emo. Following on from their self-titled 2019 EP\, the debut album …And\nNobody Made A Sound was released in 2023 on Papaiti Records (NZ) / False Peak Records\n(AU) and landed at #8 in the NZ Albums chart\, #3 on the Independent Music NZ Albums chart\nwith three singles charting on the Student Radio Network Top 10 and Radioscope NZ\nAlternative airplay charts. After a national tour to promote the album and appearing at Camp A\nLow Hum 2024\, as well as supports for Mom Jeans (US) and PUP (CA)\, they are currently\nwriting for their sophomore release. \n
