The Noveltones are an improvising chamber quartet based in Wellington, featuring the unexpected instrumentation of violin, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet and double bass. With a sound that is mostly melodious, sometimes startling, and always beguiling, the Noveltones fuse the spontaneity of jazz with the lush sonorities of chamber music. Combining their strengths as members of Wellington’s jazz, composition, experimental and world music scenes, the group is comprised of Jasmine Lovell-Smith on soprano saxophone (Arthur Street Loft Orchestra); Tristan Carter on violin (The Troubles); Blair Latham on bass clarinet (Little Blast Orchestra) and Tom Callwood on double bass (the Woods, Little Bushman).
This show will see members of the Noveltones collaborating with local improvisational luminary Reuben Derrick in the second set.
Reuben is a saxophonist, clarinettist and composer. His ongoing projects in New Zealand include various musical groups, sound design and music for theatre, as well as multi-disciplinary collaboration with dance, painting, sculpture, circo-arts and poetry. He is a member of the Cantabrian Society of Sonic Artists.
Recently Reuben performed in Vienna, Ljubljana and Zagreb, The Nowhere Festival (Auckland, 2018), the Radio Asia Festival (Warsaw, 2018) and at the Music Matters Festival (Colombo, 2016).
