Tom Roud (known in the local music scene as 1/4 of Model Home) is running for Christchurch City Council!
I’m a library worker and union delegate and have been working in the central city for the last seven years. I grew up in Christchurch and my family has roots in Woolston going back to the 1880s. I’m also a local musician, having played in Christchurch bands for the last 15 years.
Our city can be a great place to live, but only if it’s a great place to live for everyone. We’ve had a great opportunity to rebuild our city, now it’s time to make sure we don’t leave anyone behind in the Christchurch of the 21st century. The central city is where so many of us live, work, and socialise – we all have a stake in the central ward thriving.
We need a democratic, proactive local government that invests in its community – a council that hears from ordinary people, not just well-connected big business. One that builds and maintains quality infrastructure and service delivery, that is governed democratically and transparently, that retains and expands the assets that the people of Christchurch own collectively, and one that values social equality and an economy that lifts all boats. We need a city that works for working people.
Local music is really important to me, and the local venues that have kept it alive since the earthquakes are essential for so many of us. Almost all of my political connections have started through music, and almost everything I know about organising has started with organising gigs. Part of why I am running is to make sure local music and local venues have a serious advocate to protect this essential part of Christchurch culture and nightlife. So what better way to kick things off than with a gig including some of my favourite musicians in the city?
