Simurgh is a Christchurch-based fusion ensemble of traditional instruments from Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, India, and the Arabic world. The group was born out of the collaboration between multi-instrumentalists Esmail Fathi, Liam Oliver, Nelson & Pragunya Myers-Daly, as well as other local musicians and singers experienced in these rich music traditions. Esmail and Liam are known for co-founding the eponymous Simurgh Music School, Aotearoa’s first organization aimed to teach the performing arts from Persia and surrounding regions. AL P and his P.A.L's were originally known as the Unknown Legends but a change in drummers meant a change in name. New drummer, Dawn Hendrikse joins Lucinda Whiteley on bass (and vocals) giving the band a distinctly female feel. Gordy Goodinson adds his deft touch on lead guitar and Al Park plays electric, acoustic guitar and sings.
